Why mindfulness

Why five minutes of noticing changes so much

Mindfulness for a kid isn't sitting still or emptying their mind. It's the practice of noticing, on purpose, instead of running on autopilot. That one small skill is the foundation almost everything else gets built on.

01

Calmer in the moment

A kid who's practiced slow breaths on an ordinary Tuesday has something to reach for on a hard day. The practice comes first, the calm comes later.

02

Better at noticing

The same attention it takes to really taste a snack or really listen outside is the attention they'll use in school, in conversations, in themselves.

03

Kinder, including to themselves

Kindness practiced as a habit, even quietly in their own head, gets easier to choose in the moment, toward other people and toward themselves.

04

A tool that travels with them

Naming a feeling takes some of the charge out of it. Practiced enough in calm moments, it becomes something they can reach for on their own, long after this playbook is closed.

For everyone who shows up

One playbook for the both of you

Almost every kids' mindfulness product is written for one parent, at home, with time. This one is built for how most households run: you, your nanny, and a kid who's with each of you on different days, all working from the same pages.

For the parent

Decide once what you're going for, on the Clarity Worksheet. Then, on the days you weren't home, read the journal at dinner and pick the thread right back up.

  • Clarity Worksheet
  • The shared Parent / Nanny Journal
  • All five cards, to run yourself on the weekend

For the nanny

No inventing something on the spot at 3pm. Open a card, run the Play, ask the questions that are already written out, and leave the Notice for the parents to read that night.

  • Five full cards, nothing to prep
  • The same journal the parents read
  • Something to hand off at the end of the day

For the tiny human

Their own Kiddo Journal. They can draw it or write it, and there's no wrong way to fill it in. That's what turns this into something of theirs instead of something done to them.

  • Kiddo Journal
  • Taste, sound, breath, kindness, naming a big feeling, one every few days
  • Built for real, wiggly kids
What's inside

Five cards. One worksheet. Two journals. One calendar.

Every card is laid out the same way: the Why, the Play, the Conversation, the Notice. Run one and you can run all of them. Each takes about five minutes and needs nothing you don't already have in the house. All five are exclusive to this Playbook.

Card 1 of 5

Exploring Taste

Ages 3+

One snack, eaten slowly and on purpose. Texture, sound, and taste, one bite at a time. It's paying attention, practiced on something a kid already wants to do.

  • The Why · The Play · The Conversation · The Notice
  • Only in The Mindfulness Playbook
Card 2 of 5

Exploring Sound

Ages 3+

Sit somewhere noisy, outside if you can, and count how many different sounds you catch. Then talk about the best one, the worst one, and the one that was there all along.

  • The Why · The Play · The Conversation · The Notice
  • Only in The Mindfulness Playbook
Card 3 of 5

Belly Breathing

Ages 2+

Hands on the belly, breathe in until it fills like a balloon, out until it flattens. It's a reset button a kid can reach for on their own, before a big feeling takes over.

  • The Why · The Play · The Conversation · The Notice
  • Only in The Mindfulness Playbook
Card 4 of 5

Exploring Kindness

Ages 4+

Think of four people and wish each one well: someone you love, someone you don't get along with, a stranger, and yourself. Yourself is the one that surprises kids.

  • The Why · The Play · The Conversation · The Notice
  • Only in The Mindfulness Playbook
Card 5 of 5

Naming the Storm

Ages 4+

Four steps together: recognize the feeling, say it out loud, allow it without having to make it go away, then investigate where it sits in the body and what's needed. Big feelings get less scary once they have a name and a shape.

  • The Why · The Play · The Conversation · The Notice
  • Only in The Mindfulness Playbook
Worksheet

Clarity Worksheet

Fill this in before you start. What you want to see change for your kid, why it matters to you, when you'll realistically fit it in, and how you'll celebrate sticking with it. This one page is what turns five activities into a plan.

Journal 01

Parent / Nanny Journal

A log for four sessions at a time. Card, date, how they responded, what's getting easier, harder, or sillier, and one thing to remember for next time. Written to be read by the other person.

Journal 02

Kiddo Journal

Room for three days. Draw it, write it, whatever works today. "How were you mindful today?" and "Can you think of a time when using this will be helpful?" Theirs to keep and theirs to fill in however they want.

Bonus

Practice Calendar

A blank monthly grid that works for any month. Write in the dates yourself and check off each day you run a card.

5 cards + 1 worksheet + 2 journals + 1 calendar
How it works

Open it. Run it. Hand it off.

01

Get clear first

Fill out the Clarity Worksheet at the beginning, set your intentions for doing this, and share it with your nanny so you're both on the same page.

02

Run a card

Any order you like, every few days or all at once, you decide!

03

Journal & hand off

Grownups and tiny humans write their experiences in the journal and share if they would like to!

Repetition is what makes this stick, develop a plan to go over it regularly, and before you know it your tiny human will be using these play techniques in everyday life!

Who made this

I wrote the plan I wish someone had handed me.

Hi, I'm Paulette. Before any of this, I was the one in the room, nannying for a family whose girls I loved like my own. I spent years of their most impressionable days with them, and most afternoons I was improvising, hoping whatever we landed on counted for something. What I noticed, eventually, is that the small things stuck the most. A few slow breaths before a hard moment. Noticing a sound outside instead of rushing past it. Tasting something on purpose instead of inhaling it between activities. I never called them lessons, and they picked it up anyway.

As a youth leadership coach across three different continents, I realized that I had the resources to help others bypass the struggles I went through. The Mindfulness Playbook are my notes of coaching and nannying blended together. It's the plan I wanted on the afternoons I was improvising, and it's written so anyone can pick it up where it left off.

A nanny and a family who are genuinely aligned, working from the same playbook, is rarer than it should be. Nannies want to do more than just get through the day. Parents want to know their kids are learning and growing in the hours they're not there. That's what this is for, and I hope you love it as much as I have loved working on it!

Questions

Before you buy

What exactly do I get?
One 13-page PDF. Five complete Playbook Cards (Exploring Taste, Exploring Sound, Belly Breathing, Exploring Kindness, and Naming the Storm), the Clarity Worksheet, the Parent / Nanny Journal, the Kiddo Journal, and a practice calendar, plus a welcome note on how to use it and a wrap-up page at the end. Open it on your phone or print it at home. It's a PDF, with no video to sit through and no login to keep track of.
How is this different from the free cards?
Think of the free set (Small Goal Big Win, Belly Breathing, Look Again) as playtime warmups, personal development through play you can run anytime. This Playbook is the focused practice: five cards on taste, sound, breath, kindness, and naming a big feeling, the everyday routine that builds calm and self-regulation. One of the free three, Belly Breathing, is also a sample card from here. It comes with the Clarity Worksheet, both journals, the practice calendar, and the guidance on running it as a habit two people share.
Do I need a nanny for this to make sense?
No. It's built so two caregivers can run the same plan, whether that's a nanny, a partner, or a grandparent. Everything in it works fine with one grown-up and one kid.
What ages is it for?
Each card lists the minimum age at the top. The maximum age? We consider that to be 110!
